3 steps for a less toxic home

Ah, our home. Our safe place and where we spend a lot of our precious time with family, friends and fur babies.  I love knowing we can come home from a long day out to a clean, healthy and non toxic space. As a homemaker and mindful wife, a lot of you can relate, we get to express our love through the way we do things at home. I want to share with you 3 ways we have made our home less toxic and why.

We said goodbye to most if not all synthetic fragrances

Yup! Perfumes, body sprays, candles, soaps, lotions, shampoos, detergents, room sprays, all types of cleaners and other products that contained harmful synthetic fragrance were swapped to smarter products in our home. It took a couple years but it has been one of the most impactful changes we’ve done. Synthetic chemicals / fragrances in products like these interfere with our hormones and endocrine system. They are huge disrupters and WILL cause hormonal imbalance. We know hormonal imbalance can lead to many terrible symptoms and illnesses. I had the worst hormonal imbalance for years, gained so much weight in a short amount of time, acne, hair loss, irregular cycles, moodiness, fatigue, severe anxiety and gut issues all while using these products and not having the knowledge that I have now! Since doing the switch my life is completely changed, I am no longer sick!

We stopped buying foods with artificial coloring and harmful chemicals

I grew up with cereals, snacks, candy and foods that did have artificial coloring, tons of different oils, and chemicals I can’t even pronounce and I was fine till I reached my teenage years. Like I mention before I started suffering of imbalances, gut issues, skin conditions and we didn’t know why. I even went to the doctor once and they said I had a condition called alopecia and that I was going to lose all my hair completely and that I had to accept it. They even wanted to try steroid shots on my head to see if it helped. I was terrified! I could no longer take it! I knew deep down this wasn’t the answer, so I decided to research about these harmful chemicals that are put in most of our foods, I was shocked! These artificial food colorings are linked to many health conditions like chronic illnesses, high toxicity, asthma, allergies, skin conditions like eczema all the way to learning impairment and aggressiveness. I was mind blown! Now, I will say, it is hard for me personally to stay completely away from these harmful chemicals and colorings at all times, like when we go out to eat because, well, they are EVERYWHERE!!! So for years now I follow one rule, we will not see these harmful and toxic chemicals in my grocery list 99% of the time. There are so many smart options out there we can take advantage of! It is all about being mindful!

We got rid of plastic containers and Tupperware

I’ll be honest I still drink from water bottles at times when im out and about and do use some items at home that are plastic. What I did quit completely was using plastic Tupperware or storage containers to ether store, heat up food or place hot food on. These items tend to leak or transfer harmful chemicals into your food specially when hot. When exposed to these chemicals often our bodies experience endocrine disrupters, exposure to chemicals that could cause cancer and many other health issues, too many to name. I believe this could be an easy and realistic way to start your detoxifying at home!

In a world of toxic everything where it almost feels like we have no control, we actually DO have control over many little things that CAN and WILL make a difference. We don’t want to stress over being perfect or doing ALL things right but we do strive to be more mindful and do what we can within our circumstances to have better physical, mental and emotional health!
